Mechanical Design Engineer

This is an incredibly varied, project-based engineering role, improving our existing products and leading the new product introduction process.

Electronics or Mechatronics for laboratory automation

Have an idea. Do some design. Make some circuit boards. Experiment with some controllers. Test your prototypes. Design for manufacture. Take product to market. Celebrate! Next idea.

THE ROLE

This is an incredibly varied, project-based engineering role, improving our existing products and leading the new product introduction process. You will work with cross-functional teams to ensure your solutions maximise value to our customers and don’t affect functionality. You will design your ideas on SolidWorks. You will prototype your ideas yourself, using 3D printers and laser cutters. For machined components, you will have an in-house team of CNC Engineers at your disposal. You will work closely with suppliers of motors, drivers and controllers to get things powered. You will get your hands ‘dirty’ (clean-room assembly facilities) and assemble your prototypes yourself or with the Assembly Team. You will use our in-house Software Team to get things moving (bonus: unless you can program firmware yourself). You’ll work with our Science Team to get your designs tested. You’ll design for manufacture and supply technical drawings. You will review and improve new product designs from our R&D department. You will lead and support production-wide CI programs using all the “House of Lean” tools at your disposal. You’ll manage the project for deployment to Operations and the world’s biologists. Party, then we’ll start again!

THE TEAM

You will do this as a member of the Continuous Improvement Team which is new to Singer Instruments. You will optimise our existing product portfolio for manufacture at our Roadwater HQ which houses CNC lathes, Mills, and 5-axis as well as 3D printers, Laser Cutters, and another manufacturing kit. You will support the production team in delivering a lean value chain to our customers, internal & external. Through regular project review meetings, you will get inspiration and input from other engineers. Conversely, you will add conceptual value and know-how to concurrent projects managed by others. You will automate our processes in manufacturing and information flows.

THE REWARD

The work you do will help scientists in laboratories in over 50 countries accelerate their research efforts on global challenges such as cures for cancer and solutions for renewable energies.

Requirments

  • A mechanical engineering design background
  • Experience in driving new products to the production teams
  • Lean Manufacturing process design and kaizen deployment
  • Experience with component/assembly testing, test fixture creation, and reliability testing
  • Excellent people and project management skills
  • Expert use of Solidworks or similar CAD systems
  • Producing 2D drawings with accurate GD&Ts
  • Excellent RCA and problem-solving skills
  • An understanding of design for manufacture and production methodologies
  • Strong interest in technology, innovation, and robotics
  • Willing to take on training and improve skillset

Bonus Requirements

  • A 2:1 degree in Mechatronic Design or similar discipline
  • Manufacturing knowledge – CNC [Lathe, Mills, 5-Axis], Laser Cutting, 3D Printing
  • Embedded programming / Firmware writing
  • Strong electronics design skills [PCBs, Communication Protocols, Motors and Drivers]
  • A firm grasp of financials and ROI calculations
  • “House of Lean” expertise
  • In-depth knowledge of Engineering Maths, allowing the manufacture of right-first-time designs
  • Experience with fast-cycle product development feedback loops
  • High level of understanding of ergonomics and product usability
  • A passion for disruptive technologies
  • BBQ Skills
