Internship / Placement

Calling all budding engineers, software developers, roboticists, synthetic biologists and mathematicians! Join our dynamic R&D Team for 3 months and party with us after another successful product launch!

The role

Calling all budding engineers, software developers, roboticists, synthetic biologists and mathematicians!

Come and join our dynamic Research and Development Team for three months. You will have your own project, and the support of experienced engineers, software developers, electronics engineers, researchers and manufacturers.

You will have some awesome tools at your disposal including 3D printers, rapid CNC prototyping, a biology laboratory and our existing portfolio of robotics.

You will get exposure to many aspects of modern industrial business, including fast-pace design iteration with Agile Project Management, Scrum Meetings, Planning Poker and Amigos (Integrated Product Development 5.0).

We have lots of projects on offer, all related to lab automation, which can be tailored to your preferences. Some examples in different disciplines include:

Robotics / Electronics Projects

Use Raspberry Pi or Arduinos or Smoothiboards (or learn how to) in order to…

– Build a test rig
– Collect and analyse test result data
– Help develop new robotics sub-assemblies
– Run a VAVE (value analysis value engineering) project

Using C# or Java or Unity or Matlab or R or any software you like for…

– Developing cutting edge IoT-based architectural infrastructure
– Modelling and simulation projects
– Bioinformatics projects
– Machine learning projects
– Build a Shiny app with R for image analysis

Use Solidworks for design and our machine shop technicians to manufacture components for…

– Robotics hardware assemblies
– Redesigning existing products
– A VAVE (value analysis value engineering) project

Support from a team of scientists and our Applications Laboratory for…

– Market research projects to help shape product portfolio strategy
– Random mutagenesis and beer-brewing for fun
– Develop QA procedures for testing new products

Use any software you like for…

– Modelling and simulation projects
– Build a Shiny app with R for image analysis

Your work will be presented to stakeholders – including engineers, programmers and scientists. You will need to be able to communicate complex procedures simply and effectively. You will be mentored by one of the Research & Development team members, as well as one Senior Manager, who will do everything they can to ensure you have a positive experience.

Singer Instruments have hosted many previous interns, and like them, you will have the opportunity to experience many different aspects of our business. We always work with you to understand which areas you find most interesting, and where possible, nurture you within those roles. You will also have the opportunity to shadow different roles that are well out of your comfort zone!

Skills Developed

You will work with multiple people across departments, discovering new tools, systems and ideas. Furthering your understanding of how lab automation can support research and vice versa. Discover how new product ideas are taken from concept to market. You will gain an understanding of working within the robotics industry, across multiple business functions and of the laboratory automation market.

A small team means a lot of confidence-boosting exposure. You will be interacting with international collaborators and board level management. Helping to shape products that will be used by laboratories all around the World!
